A Beginner’s Guide to Minesweeper: From Your First Click to Expert Boards

Minesweeper is easy to learn, but every board gives you a new puzzle to solve. The numbers reveal how many mines are hiding nearby, and each safe move helps uncover the next part of the grid.

You can play the classic game at https://playminesweeper.gg/ — no download needed. Choose a difficulty, read the clues, and see how quickly you can clear the board.

Start with the board that suits you

Beginner is a 9 × 9 board with 10 mines, making it a good place to learn the clues and controls. Intermediate expands to 16 × 16 with 40 mines. Expert gives you a larger 30 × 16 field with 99 mines, where a single overlooked clue can change your whole plan.

Each difficulty has its own times and records, so you compare your Beginner result with other Beginner clears, and Expert with Expert. The timer begins with your first move, giving you time to pick a level and get comfortable before the clock starts.

Use the clues to make safe moves

Every number counts the mines in the eight surrounding squares, including the diagonals. A 1 means one neighboring square contains a mine. A 2 means two do.

Look for clues with only a few covered neighbors. If a 1 touches just one covered square, that square must be a mine. If the flags around a number already match its value, the other covered neighbors are safe to open.

Flags can help you keep track, but you do not have to flag every mine to win. The goal is to uncover every safe square. Take a moment to compare nearby numbers, especially when several clues share the same covered spaces.

Try the Daily Challenge

Classic mode gives you a fresh board whenever you want to play. The Daily Challenge adds a shared puzzle: players receive the same seeded board for that date and difficulty, then compare successful clear times on a separate daily leaderboard.

That makes the daily game a different kind of test. You already know the layout is the same for everyone, so the challenge is to read the opening clues carefully and find a reliable route through the board.

Chase a personal best or climb the leaderboard

After a clear, check your time and see whether you can improve it on another run. The global leaderboard ranks successful games by difficulty and period, including all-time records. When times are tied, fewer moves can decide the order.

Your personal bests stay in your browser, while leaderboard results let you compare your runs with other players. Country flags can also appear beside players when country information is available.

Whether you have a few minutes for a Beginner board or want to take on Expert, Minesweeper rewards careful thinking more than random clicks. Start a game, follow the clues, and see if your next clear can beat your best time.
